The hotspot for visitors and tourists is the Rethymnon Old Town. Like one long strip of road with shops, bars, and cafes, you really get to have an authentic experience like one of the locals.
Like many islands, ancient fortresses were built to defend the harbor and keep an eye out for invading armies. Give yourself plenty of time to explore this fortress, as there are many things to see from the fortress itself, to the museum, and all the wonderful sights.
A long-lasting Monastery, the Moni Preveli is thought to have been built in the Middle Ages. There is a museum here, and nearby is a car park overlooking the beach near the end of the Kourtaliotiki Gorge.

For an interesting hike while in Crete, this little gem is a perfect place to visit. Unknown by many tourists, it’s easy to have the gorge to yourself. Be mindful of the weather though, as sometimes it can be impossible to cross the terrain.
If you love to eat fish, then the harbour is definitely the place to grab a bite to eat. All the taverns have fresh fish, and along the harbour are many artisan shops.

Just outside of town, this small museum is worth a visit to learn a little about the history of Crete and its military.
The scenery is amazing if you’re lucky enough to pass by the Kotsifou Canyon during your visit to Crete. Many pass by the gorge when driving to Plakias, and it’s well worth a quick stop to take in the view.
